SANDRA L BLOOD

It is expected to be the most sensational stage production of 2024; a definite must-attend event; and if you’re looking for excellent authentic kaiso, then Calypso Spektakula (CS) has it all as it celebrates its 42nd anniversary, said director of Calypso Spektakula, Frank Martineau.

CS 2024 will be premiered on January 24 at 7pm at NAPA, Port of Spain, and Martineau said for this once-in-a-lifetime show, he has signed some of T&T’s calypso legends and some of today’s soca stars inclusive of National Calypso Monarchs and Road March Champions.

CS will be staged at three venues, and among the icons will be 92-year-old Lord Nelson; nine-time National Calypso Monarch Chalkdust; National Calypso Monarch Pink Panther; Chutney Soca Monarch Rikki Jai; Road March Champs Crazy, Poser and Iwer George; Young King Monarch Bally; and Baron, Johnny King, Organiser and Black Prince.

The Legend: Edwin "Crazy" Ayoung

Notwithstanding being in the process of mourning his wife who very-recently passed, Chalkdust is keen to perform for his fans who have supported him for over half a century. He’s also part of the cast at the Kalypso Revue Tent.

Also mourning a loss, but against all odds, performing, is Toco diva, Patrice Roberts, whose fiancé Ricardo Drue died last month. Among her many new hits, she will deliver "Anxiety".

USA-based Rikki Jai has returned home for performances, and...

while Iwer George has announced his retirement from calypso, he’s expected to raise the ceiling with a spectacular performance.

The in-demand soca stars on the billing include Patrice Roberts, Nadia Batson, Ronnie McIntosh, the 2024 party king Mical Teja, and Olatunji.

Mical’s 2024 songs have been on heavy rotation on the airwaves since Christmas. His DNA is the preferred choice of tune for many large conventional steelbands vying in this year’s National Panorama competition. His Hall of Fame was very popular last year, and Run Away is making in-roads.

Like Mical, Olatunji is also big for C2K24 with The Inventor. His Engine Room was selected as the Calypso of the Year last year.

While Spektakula Promotions was established in 1977 and is celebrating its 47th year currently, Martineau said its 42-year-old tent promises total entertainment from beginning to end.

“Patrons are assured of excellence as they relive the glory days of Calypso Spektakula.”

Mical Teja - Mr DNA

One of the treats of the production is said to be Crazy’s hilarious response to Nadia Batson’s Whole Blinkin’ Market. Crazy has been getting much attention with his Whole Blinkin’ Hardware.

Apart from NAPA, the production will be reprised on January 27 at SAPA, San Fernando, and on February 2, Centre of Excellence, Macoya.

Tickets are $275 for Special Reserve and $225 General Admission, and available at NAPA and SAPA box offices, Crosby’s Western Main Road, St. James; Marts Liquor Palace, Diego Martin Main Road; Xtra Foods, Grand Bazar and Endeavour; Diskomart/Western Union, Tunapuna; Kenny’s Sports, Queen Janelle “Penny” Commissiong Street, POS; West Mall; Michelle’s, Arima; Atherlys by The Park; and Seons of Royal Road, San Fernando.
