The stigma and discrimination associated with the deadly HIV/AIDS virus will be highlighted this weekend, even as the beauty of neighbouring Barbados is showcased to the world via Trinbagonian-based web portal, overtimett.com. From 6 pm, this Sunday evening, the innovative entertainment web platform will broadcast the 2011 Island Queen Barbados Contest live from the Allamanda Hotel in Hastings, Christ Church.

“We heard about the contest,” said Overtime Director, Nigel Jordan, “and decided it would be a good opportunity to test our voting platform, while establishing solid relations with our neighbours to the north and simultaneously attracting a more regional audience. Added to that, the theme of this year’s contest is one that requires our attention and our efforts as we seek to combat the deadly AIDS virus through the dissemination of relevant information to our young people.”
Now in its fourth edition, the Island Queen contest is dedicated to showcasing the beautiful women of the Caribbean, while providing them with an opportunity to share all their other talents, dreams and passions with a wider audience. This year’s theme is “I am Aware: Soldiers of Awareness” and aims to increase public awareness of HIV/AIDS.
All ten swimsuit-clad, ‘Soldiers of Awareness’ will march onto the stage of the hotel’s scenic Black Pearl Restaurant at 5.30 pm when the pageant gets underway.
“The organisers were very excited to have us on board,” added Jordan, “and have been most accommodating and efficient in all our discussions, so we’re all looking forward to the event this Sunday evening.”
This event can be viewed live online at www.overtimett.com and viewers can vote for their favourite contestant via their personal page on overtimett.com. Prizes will be awarded in several categories and even the voters can win prizes for selecting the eventual Viewers Choice Awardee.
