US-based, ‘celebrity’ hair stylist and Salon Owner, Janel Sealy-Smith is determined to tackle the crime situation here in T&T from the inside-out... After volunteering in the Women's Prison here in Trinidad for the past few years, Smith came up with the idea to start a rehabilitative campaign and produce a television show, in order to showcase the plight of the women in these correctional facilities.
This initiative has been dubbed “Healing Through Hair” and begins with:
- a grand Hair Show at the Trinidad Hilton Ballroom on November 11th, followed by
- a fund-raising, pool party at the same venue on November 12th, 2011 and
- a full day of educational workshops with professionals from the US on November 13th
- a television special highlighting her work in the prison, scheduled to air locally in December, 2011
